Anthony ‘Tony’ James Steckman passed into the presence of the Lord on January 19, 2017, after a sudden illness.
Anthony ‘Tony’ James Steckman was born on February 3, 1966, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of James Mikel Steckman and Grace Hope (Tisor) Steckman.

Tony participated in Central Junior High football until an accident caused him to require hip surgery in November of 1979. He graduated from Muscatine High School, Class of 1984 and went on to earn a Liberal Arts degree from Muscatine Community College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Iowa in 1988.

Tony was very active in high school participating in homecoming and prom planning, plays, student council and chorus, lettering in Music. He is currently Class of 1984 Reunion Treasurer.

While at MCC, he was elected to the 1986 Homecoming Court, sang in chorus and also served on the Student Senate.
While at the University of Iowa, he served as a representative on the Association of Residence Halls for the Mayflower Dormitory and was active in College Republicans.

At age seven he served as Muscatine’s First Heart Fund Prince in 1973, because he was one of the children to receive open heart surgery the previous year.

Tony had worked at call centers in Iowa City, Des Moines for Quest, and his last job was at AT&T in Davenport, IA.
He also was an avid volunteer phone campaigner for various candidates running for office and was selected for the Ernest Staggs Award by the Muscatine County Democrats in 2014. He got a great deal of people registered to vote in future elections.

Tony was a member of the Island United Methodist Church, a member of the Twelve at the Midwest Christian Ashram, was a witness for Lay Witness Missions and Ventures in Discipleship and participated in many different Bible studies in college and after. Because he had a beautiful singing voice, he was asked to sing at weddings, funerals and church functions. ..

Although Tony had many health issues, he was thoughtful, loving, kind and had a giving heart. Although allergic, he loved cats, dogs, and other animals especially elephants.

Anthony is survived by his mother; a brother, David Steckman and wife (Tonya); a nephew, Justin Steckman; a niece, Kimberly Stevens and her three children, Symira Grace, Isabella and Dominic, three aunts and many cousins and hundreds of Facebook Friends. He was preceded in death by his father who passed in January 15, 2015.

The family requests no flowers. Donations for a memorial fund for Anthony may be made to Grace Steckman with Tony’s name on the memo line. There has been some discussion of setting up a Scholarship Fund in his memory but it is not final yet. If it does not work out Grace will distribute the funds to several charities like NAMI, HEART ASSOCIATION or perhaps Diabetes Foundation, Humane Society or Save the Elephants, in his memory.
