Obituary for John W. Crook, Sr.

John W. Crook, Sr., 76, of Muscatine, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Lutheran Living.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 24, at Calvary Church. A time of food and fellowship will follow the service. Nichols Life Tribute Funeral and Cremation Services, Muscatine, is caring for John’s family and arrangements.

John was born August 22, 1940, in Muscatine, the son of George and Vivian Cutler Crook. He graduated high school with the MHS Class of 1958. He married Karen L. Essex on February 13, 1960, in Muscatine. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii in 2010.

He was a branch manager of Capitol Savings and Loan in Muscatine and later worked at Central State Bank where he retired in 2000.

He greatly enjoyed boating on the Mississippi, bowling in his younger years, going out to eat with friends, traveling, watching Cubs baseball and Hawkeye football and basketball, duck and pheasant hunting and most of all having a good time with his family.

John will be deeply missed by his wife, Karen; daughter, Susan (Ace) Morris; son, John Crook, Jr.; four grandchildren, Keith Crook of Salem, MA, Adrienne Braun and Nicole Morris both of Wapello, IA and Sophie Crook of Muscatine; brother, David (Donna) Crook of Seymour, IN; sister, Gloria Hahn of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Michael, one sister Delores and one brother-in-law, Herb Hahn.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Lutheran Living staff, especially Nurse Brenda and Letti, for their comforting care of John and to Hospice Compassus staff including Nurse Ann, Chaplain Don, Aide Jennifer and Social Worker Beth for their concern and support.
